Step 1: Write 5 background and concept elements that you feel are important to your image of the character.
Wanderer is a member of the Niuean clan of goliaths whose home is located in the nearest mountain range to the Forest of Dreams. Members of the Niuean clan are required to spend a period of no shorter than a year traveling the larger world following their sixteenth birthday. The goal of this period abroad is for members of the clan to observe and to learn about other races and cultures and return to the clan with skills and knowledge they believe will help strengthen the clan as a whole. Most members of the clan return fairly quickly but some are gone for years. Wanderer had chosen to spend the last couple years observing and interacting with the peoples located within and nearby the Forest of Dreams. Upon returning to his clan’s traditional home, he discovered no trace of their whereabouts however. There were no signs of a battle, or signs of ruins, or even signs that they had once settled the region.
Aren is called “Wanderer.” In the Niuean clan’s culture, a naming ceremony is performed relatively quickly following childbirth. The clan’s shaman consults with his spirit guides and provides the clan with a name with which to call their new clansmen. The name is generally thought to be a sign of sorts related to the newborn’s life in some manner. Upon the completion of one’s time abroad, the clansman returns to the clan and is given the right to use their adult name. Some clansmen choose to continue to use their spiritual name. Aren continues to call himself “Wanderer” because he has not returned to his clan are performed the proper ceremonial naming rights.
Aren is the second son of the leader of his clan, Jaspre Alarik. Being the second son, Aren was raised with only a minimal amount of training for the role of leadership though. Leadership within the clan is predicated on one’s display of physical, spiritual, and moral fortitude. Despite Aren’s taciturn and quiet nature, his impressive physical size and prowess led the clan’s elders to view Aren as having the potential for leadership within the clan (although not necessarily as head clansman). As a result, Aren’s older brother, Adem, who coveted the position of head clansman for himself, viewed Aren as a rival to the claim (Adem figured he could scheme his way into his father’s position based on his heredity). Adem worked hard at making Aren feel like an outsider amongst their peers.
As a result, Aren has had a difficult time integrating himself within the various groups he’s come across in his travels. He is often perceived by others he has met as somewhat weird or standoffish. Given time though, the people he has traveled with have come to appreciate his martial prowess and stoic disposition.
Niuean culture values the contributions of both the male and female members of clan highly. As a result, a women’s council exists that supplies and, at times, guides the men’s council on matters important to the clan. Aren’s mother, Perse (Jaspre’s second wife – the first wife died giving birth to Adem), was a high ranking member of this council as well. As a result, Aren’s respect for women of all races and cultures often exceeds that of the large majority of other cultures’ male members. Therefore, his behavior towards women is often viewed by others as overly chivalrous and has gotten him into spots of trouble.
Step 2: List at least two goals for the character. At least one of these goals should be one that the character has, while another should be one that you, as a player, want to see developed over the course of the game.
Aren is searching for what happened to his clansmen. He particularly wants to know what happened to his large family (he has four brothers and six sisters).
Actually, I’d just like to see our group develop into a cohesive fighting party that challenges you to come up with ridiculous encounters in order for us to feel threatened.
Step 3: List at least two secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet.
Aren knows that his brother, Adem, wants to seize control of the Niuean clan and rule as an absolute sovereign but he has not told anyone because he believes it nothing more than bluster.
Aren doesn’t know that his brother has hired a wizard/assassin to kill Aren so he doesn’t return to the clan and potentially cause him trouble while he seeks to secure and consolidate rule.
Step 4: Describe at least three people that are tied to the character. Two of the people are friendly to the character and one is hostile to the character.
Gob Fleetfeet – A Halfling rogue who Aren has befriended on his travels. Gob mainly likes Aren because Aren listens to all his outlandish stories with little comment.
Adem Alarik – Aren’s half-brother who wants Aren eliminated.
Yasra Alarik – One of Aren’s sisters. She is only a little over a year younger and should be on her own adventurous year herself although their paths have yet to cross.
Step 5: Describe three memories, mannerisms, or quirks that your character has. They don’t have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.
Aren has chosen to use an unusual combination of weaponry – a waraxe and a drow long knife he found during his travels.
Aren wears little attire besides his armor because he finds non-mountainous climates unbearably hot.
Despite carrying a bedroll, Aren prefers to sleep on rocky surfaces because it reminds him of home somewhat.
